Navigation in Virtual Environments through Motor Imagery
نویسندگان
چکیده
In this paper we report on the navigation in a virtual environment by the output signal of an EEG-based Brain-Computer Interface (BCI). Such a BCI transforms bioelectrical brain signals, modified by mental activity into a control signal. At this time only 1-D or 2-D BCI feedbacks are used. The graphical possibilities of virtual reality (VR) should help to improve BCI-feedback presentations and create new paradigms, with the intention to obtain a better control of the BCI. In this study the subjects had to imagine left or right hand movements and thereby exploring a virtual conference room. With a left hand motor imagery the subject turned in the room to the left and vice versa. Three trained subjects reached 77% to 100% classification accuracy in the course of the experimental sessions.

Introduction: Brain Computer Interface (BCI) systems based on Movement Imagination (MI) are widely used in recent decades. Separate feature extraction methods are employed in the MI data sets and classified in Virtual Reality (VR) environments for real-time applications. Methods: This study applied wide variety of features on the recorded data using Linear Discriminant Analysis (LDA) classifie...
متن کاملAudio-cued motor imagery-based brain-computer interface: Navigation through virtual and real environments
The aim of this work is to provide a navigation paradigm that could be used to control a wheelchair through a brain–computer interface (BCI). In such a case, it is desirable to control the system without a graphical interface so that it will be useful for people without gaze control. Thus, an audio-cued paradigm with several navigation commands is proposed. In order to reduce the probability of...
متن کاملNavigation of a Mobile Robot Using Virtual Potential Field and Artificial Neural Network
Mobile robot navigation is one of the basic problems in robotics. In this paper, a new approach is proposed for autonomous mobile robot navigation in an unknown environment. The proposed approach is based on learning virtual parallel paths that propel the mobile robot toward the track using a multi-layer, feed-forward neural network. For training, a human operator navigates the mobile robot in ...
متن کاملAugmented reality and photogrammetry: A synergy to visualize physical and virtual city environments
Close-range photogrammetry is based on the acquisition of imagery to make accurate measurements and, eventually, three-dimensional (3D) photo-realistic models. These models are a photogrammetric product per se. They are usually integrated into virtual reality scenarios where additional data such as sound, text or video can be introduced, leading to multimedia virtual environments. These environ...
متن کاملExploring Large Virtual Environments by Thoughts Using a Brain-Computer Interface Based on Motor Imagery and High-Level Commands
Brain-computer interfaces (BCI) are interaction devices which enable users to send commands to a computer by using brain activity only. In this paper, we propose a new interaction technique to enable users to perform complex interaction tasks and to navigate within large virtual environments (VE) by using only a BCI based on imagined movements (motor imagery). This technique enables the user to...
